Presence Film
The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries in this innovative ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The daughter appears sensing the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Self-Referential Film
Cage fully commits to his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, multiple child abductions has rendered the children on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the people's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet Jessica Chastain manages to depict the real-life figure with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, the Film4 channel
